How to Help Clients Succeed Without Setting Goals

Paradoxically, by not setting goals, you often open up more potential for change.

When clients don’t have to defend or contort themselves in the face of goals, they can take a more natural path that is free from the pressure of progressing down a linear path. Without having to set agendas and goals, you’ll find that your work becomes less effortful and more attuned to what your clients need most.

What does this look like in action? Watch the demo to find out!

This Demo Will Show You:
  • What your role looks like when you are freed from setting goals
  • What you can focus on instead of agendas and goals

How Goals Can Get in the Way of Our Clients’ Growth:

1. Goals attempt to “fix” a problem

We coach humans, not problems. Instead of trying to ‘fix’ client problems or drive them toward an imagined future, we walk alongside clients on their own natural process of change and provide scaffolding if and when it’s needed for their next step.

2. Goals live in the future

Goal setting assumes that you can know the path to take and where you will end up ahead of time, yet clients can only see as far as their current stories will take them. So, rather than asking clients to set goals now, we invite them to pay much closer attention to what is true now.

3. Goals assume a linear path

Most of our growth unfolds in ways that we can’t define ahead of time. When you set goals ahead of time, clients are boxed into where they SHOULD be on their journey instead of being free to explore where they actually are.

Working this way supports outcomes that are more:

Achievable

When you’re fully present with your clients, you can better notice where they are right now and what they need next in order to grow.

Meaningful

When you help clients get to the crux of their issues, they can make progress through coaching in ways that matter to them.

Sustainable

When you support your clients on their journey rather than try to take them on yours, the progress your clients make is more likely to stick.
